Buffalo News
You might find it surprising that a critic who only accurately predicted 23 percent of the Emmy Award winners Sunday night was quite pleased with who took home the trophies. I had the wins by "Mad Men" (best drama)," "30 Rock" (best comedy) and "Grey Gardens" (best movie).
We read the whole newspaper so you don't... No, wait. You should read the whole newspaper, too. Page C5 [cover of Business Today]:
All previous attempts and systems to keep our family organized have failed. So now we've looked at cloud computing from both sides now, from up and down, and still somehow have decided to let Google rule our lives. Our family schedule is now fully integrated on Google calendar, and it's handy, I must say, to quote Ed Grimley.
It Helps to Have the Mayor's Cell Phone Number
It turns out that Leonard Stokes did benefit from Byron Brown's intervention after the soon-to-crash-and-burn-with-taxpayer-money restaurateur got picked up using a stolen handicapped parking permit back in January 2007. Sue Schulman had an eye-opening story in Sunday's paper that found:
Race Card: Sox Closing On Yankees
I've been pretty close to declaring all the races over but I'm still waiting to see if somebody is going to go all Mets on us and choke one away. The Tigers were the first candidate but Sunday's win in Minnesota gave them a three-game lead in the AL Central and some desperately needed breathing room. The Angels, Phillies, Cardinals and Dodgers appear to have safe division leads while the Red Sox and Rockies seem to have a stranglehold on the wildcards. Give the standings a look here.
Sabres' Lineup and More On Max
Here's the Sabres' lineup for tonight's preseason game in Washington: Forwards: Thomas Vanek, Tim Connolly, Drew Stafford, Jochen Hecht, Mike Grier, Daniel Paille, Paul Gaustad, Patrick Kaleta, Tim Kennedy, Nathan Gerbe, Tyler Ennis, Felix Schutz, Jeff Cowan.
Bulls 2.5-Point Underdogs at Temple
UB may have won its last three games against Temple but it is also at this moment a 2.5-point underdog against the Owls this Saturday according to the opening line from Vegasinsider.com. That's a bit surprising considering the Owls are 0-2 including a loss to Football Championship Subdivision Villanova. The Bulls are 1-2 vs. the spread so far this season. Here are the other MAC lines:
Monday Homeroom Quarterback: Week Three
Week Three saw a record-breaker and left us with some 3-0 teams we might not have thought we'd have three weeks ago. Check out our weekly poll. Usually we ask what the biggest story of the football weekend was. But Williamsville South's Joe Licata took care of that by passing for a Section VI record Thursday night.
Breaking News: Butler Shelved for Season
Buffalo Bills right tackle Brad Butler will miss the rest of the season after injuring his right knee in Sunday's 33-20 win over the Tampa Bay Bucs. Butler was injured late in the second quarter when Tampa Bay defensive end Stylez White fell and rolled into the back of Butler's legs.
Well, let's see. Electric rates are looking to go up:
Astros Call On Member of Buffalo Hall
Some odd news late Monday afternoon out of Houston: The Astros have fired manager Cecil Cooper with just 13 games left in the season and have replaced him on an interim basis with third-base coach Dave Clark (right), the power-hitting outfielder who played for the Bisons in 1984, 1987 and 1992 and was inducted into the Buffalo Baseball Hall of Fame last summer. Highly respected Houston Chronicle columnist Richard Justice says Cooper lost the clubhouse a long time ago and Clark should have got...
Hamburg Lax's Chadderdon Verbals to Ohio State
Hamburg boys lacrosse coach Jerry Severino emailed me today with the news that Eric Chadderdon, just a junior, has verbally committed to Ohio State. Chadderdon, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound defenseman, accepted a scholarship offer from the Buckeyes. More than 30 different programs recruited Chadderdon, including Albany, North Carolina, Harvard, Dartmouth, Notre Dame, Fairfield, Georgetown, Virginia and Providence.
The running back debate is beginning to heat up among Bills fans. Fred Jackson has been a revelation through the first two games. He has 220 yards rushing (at 5.1 a pop) and 108 receiving. Jackson is second in the NFL in yards from scrimmage among running backs with 328 total yards. Tennessee's Chris Johnson has 352 combined yards after his monster 284-yard performance against the Texas in defeat on Sunday. Marshawn Lynch will return from his suspension when the Bills play at Miami next week....
