How the News Voted: Happy February (and a Who's No. 1? Poll for You)

Today is Feb. 2. We are officially in the month of the basketball playoffs. And we are officially in the middle of what I believe to be the craziest large school poll I've been a part of in a decade at The News.

Taxpayer Money Not Well Spent

Today's topic is state politics. Let's drive in: Members of the state Senate and Assembly spent a lot of time schleping back and forth between their districts and Albany last year to accomplish, well, not much, unless you count the Senate coup and largely ignoring the state's fiscal crisis as productive work.

Oscars: The More the Merrier?

"Abundanza" is what they used to call it in the old pizza commercials. As it is with pizza toppings, so let it be with Oscar nominees for Best Picture. I like it. But then I like my pizza with double cheese, double shrimp, sausage, pepperoni and mushrooms too.

Gibraltar Silently Steels Away...

On The Buffalo News Business Today cover, manufacturing moves out, moves up, and doesn't move up enough to pull profits with it: - Last Gibraltar production site in area to shut down after sale - George Pyle/The Buffalo News

Myers Named Rookie of the Month

Tyler Myers' performance in January wasn't much different than his work in October, November or December -- other than the fact he's won an award for it. The NHL today named Myers the Rookie of the Month for January. The Sabres defenseman had four goals and six assists while leading all first-year players in average ice time (24:42).

Imelda May Be Your New Love...

If you caught the Grammys on Sunday - well, first of all, I offer my condolences. Secondly, in case you were wondering who exactly was that amazing and beautiful woman with the voice of an angel flanking Jeff Beck during a smoking tribute to the late, great Les Paul & his wife Mary Ford, I'm here to help. She's Imelda May, Dublin-born siren who could easily put to shame a roomful of Beyonces and a shopping mall stuffed with Taylor Swifts without breaking a sweat, or messing up that lovely coi...

Gregg On Hitting Qbs

New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams was asked numerous questions Tuesday about trying to put heat on Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning in Super Bolw XLIV. The Saints pounded on Vikings quarterback Brett Favre in the NFC title game to such a great degree it was reminiscent of a "Rocky" movie. I felt like hollering, "Stay down, Brett." Favre, to his credit, kept getting back up. Williams said that reminded him of a Bills game against Washington in 2003 when he was coac...

Polian and Reich

Colts General Manager Bill Polian has a great nose for drafting football players. He also has a great nose for hiring coaches. Here was former Bills QB Frank Reich, the current Colts quarterbacks coach, talking about how Polian recruited him to get into coaching: "After my rookie season, he called me into his office and said, ?Hey, you need to be a coach one day.' He said, ?Play as long as you can. Then when you retire, I want you to come coach wherever I'm at.' True to form, when I retired i...

Brandt On Gailey

Gil Brandt was vice president of player personnel for the Dallas Cowboys from 1960 through 1988. He helped Dallas win a lot of games. He now works as an analyst for NFL.com. Brandt goes way back with new Bills coach Chan Gailey. Here's what he said about Gailey today:

Cowher On Bills

Former Steelers coach Bill Cowher was at a news conference for CBS on Tuesday and confirmed he had one meeting with the Buffalo Bills during their head-coaching search. "I have tremendous respect for Buffalo," Cowher told ESPN's Tim Graham. "We had some talks. It didn't really go that far. I couldn't make the commitment. I have tremendous respect for Ralph Wilson. I think it's a tremendous fan base. I think it's a golden opportunity for Chan Gailey."

Tuesday Night Live: Lockport Wins at Nt, Nichols Beats St. Francis (with Video); Also: Op Wins, Grover Loses

Hello from what should be a three-stop day of hoops. 6:28 p.m. We arrive at Erie Community College and it is a competitive first quarter -- until Darale Young hits a three and Justin Stokes puts down a one-handed slam (not on video! argh!) to give Middle College a 19-11 lead after the quarter.

Kaleta to Miss Some Time

Patrick Kaleta, who suffered a bruised foot Monday in Pittsburgh, will miss at least Wednesday's game against Ottawa and likely more. "It looks like he's going to miss some time," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said after today's Kaleta-less practice in HSBC Arena. "Nothing showed up on X-rays, but he's going to have a tough time walking on it, so he's going to miss some time."
