Gever Tulley is an unconventional sort of teacher, the kind who encourages young students to use power tools in class, test 9-volt batteries with their tongues or spend hours playing with hex nuts and string in order to discover something fascinating about gravity and propulsion.

Tulley, the co-author of "Fifty Dangerous Things (You Should Let Your Children Do)," expounded on his pedagogical philosophy of allowing kids breathing room to fool around and fail during a lecture Friday in Burchfield Penney Art Center on the Buffalo State College campus.
