Barrett's Genius Fills the Air at Mohawk Place ; Local Musicians Gather at Annual Tribute to Pink Floyd Founder and His Whimsical Body of Work

Summary

Pink Floyd founder Syd Barrett died nine years ago, but for all intents and purposes, he ceased functioning as an artist before the dawn of 1970. That the small body of work he managed to birth by that point is still massively influential and equally relevant is a testimony the Barrett's immense imaginative capabilities.

Here in Buffalo, Irving Klaws guitarist Dave Guiterrez is one of many members of the Western New York independent music scene who has never been able to get over Barrett and his madcap pop genius. He launched his annual Barrett tributes at Mohawk Place immediately following Barrett's death, and thereby clinched the title for longest-running Barrett honorarium in the world. That seems appropriate, given the fact that Barrett's music casts a long shadow over the indie-rock doings in Buffalo. Go to Mohawk on any given night, and you'll find plenty of folks willing to strike up a meaningful conversation on the inner workings of Barrett's work -- which consists primarily of Pink Floyd's storied debut, "The Piper At the Gates of Dawn."
