March 4, 1996 -- Trips to the NCAA basketball tournament for local teams deserve to be celebrated. After all, they don't come around all the time. That's why everyone connected with Canisius College was pretty happy when its team went to the Big Dance.
The setting was in Albany's Knickerbocker Arena. The Golden Griffins defeated Fairfield, 52-46, in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship game. The final shot of the game landed in the hands of Canisius guard Kevin Thompson, who threw the ball way up in the air.
