Perhaps the most trying part of coaching college football is reconciling the present with the future. On one hand, the objective is to win every time out. One the other hand, the goal is to build a program that sustains success year after year. The two don't always seem to go hand in hand.

University at Buffalo coach Jeff Quinn and his staff are high on tailback Branden Oliver, so high that Oliver leapfrogged three returnees and was given the starting job as a redshirt freshman. Thus far Oliver, a 5-foot-7, 195-pound speedster from Miami, remains on a quest to justify that faith. He's averaging a scant 3.3 yards per carry. He's yet to pop a run of longer than 19 yards. He's fumbled thrice. Doubtless the transition from training camp star to featured game-day back has been slower than expected.
