Recession, unemployment, governmental deficits triggering higher taxes and fees, families devastated and soldiers scarred by wars half a world away, families devastated here and elsewhere by the fall of an airliner from a wintry Western New York sky, a failure of confidence in governments' ability to govern, distress over the future of health care in America -- it all has been part of the mix in troubled times.
