A recent news story about little Ava Stinson and the necessity of bringing her from Canada to Buffalo's Women and Children's Hospital for neonatal care has generated both online comment and letters to the editor attacking President Obama's health care initiative.

In my own case, this article stirred up a memory from more than 20 years ago. At that time, I was working as a health care professional in a large metropolitan teaching hospital. I'll always remember a small, hard-working woman who was employed at the hospital coffee shop. One day, I didn't see her anymore and I found out later that she had died.
