From windmills to solar panels, the Town of Amherst has started the process of obtaining $1.05 million in federal economic-stimulus funding and more than $500,000 in nonfederal matching funds for energy-efficiency projects.

As the biggest taxpayer-funded energy users in town. Amherst's 30- year-old wastewater-treatment plant, the Pepsi Center and the Highway Department are expected to receive extra scrutiny for potential upgrades.
