Summary
The recent announcement of SUNY Geneseo's deactivation of its Communication Disorders and Sciences program due to budget shortfalls is not only shortsighted, but detrimental to the individuals whom speech-language pathologists and audiologists serve. I am deeply saddened and disappointed that the program that has educated so many of the leaders in my profession will end.
The college's decision to deactivate the program when the Bureau of Labor Statistics is predicting a 19 percent growth rate for speech-language pathologist jobs between now and 2018 is ill- advised. Students in New York State who are interested in the field face already tough competition for limited enrollment slots at New York State's colleges and universities. The deactivation of a leading public university program will only exacerbate this situation.See the full content of this document
