Below-freezing air temperatures and near-record warmth in the waters of Lake Erie combined to give Western New York its first significant lake-effect snow squalls Thursday and early today.

Motorists may have been unprepared for the 3 to 5 inches of wind- driven snow that fell in southern Erie County and northern Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties, but street and highway crews in cities, towns and villages across the region have been getting ready for their winter work since well before Thursday, when the flakes started really flying.
