Not so long ago, our biggest food safety worries revolved around undercooked hamburgers and overheated egg salad at picnics. But recent foodborne illness breakouts have made us painfully aware that fresh produce can just as easily be the culprit.
Between 1973 and 1997, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 190 produce-associated outbreaks involving 16,058 illnesses and eight deaths.
