James R. Hopkins, a General Motors employee and Vietnam veteran, died Sunday in Millard Fillmore Hospital. He was 65.

Born in Lockport, he attended Bennett High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, earning a Purple Heart. He carried shrapnel in his back, leftover from a bomb that exploded next to him in Vietnam. He saved a fellow soldier's life in the incident.
