Black Friday came early this year. Retailers are hoping that hint of desperation will make avid bargain-hunters smell blood in the water, and move in for the kill.

The desperation is real, and recession-driven. While economic recovery may indeed be under way, it's a jobless recovery so far and consumers are still wary of spending any more than they have to. Retailers have tried discounts and bargains already, so the game now is to try to extend the season.
