It started in August with hoarseness. At first, Buffalo lawyer John P. "Jack" Hains suspected his raspy throat was related to brain tumor surgery a decade earlier in which one of his vocal cords had been frozen.
Now he wishes that had been the case. It turned out he was experiencing the first sign of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease, a degenerative illness that attacks motor neurons in the brain.
