Summary
Remember those stories about colonists coming together in a festive atmosphere to erect a barn or house for a neighbor, or a school or church for their community? We don't do much of that kind of thing anymore.
There are a few notable exceptions, of course. The outstanding Habitat for Humanity program is one. Another that comes closer to the colonial activity is the building of lean-tos along hiking trails.
