Bergman is gone and so is Bunuel. So are all the Italian titans of the European generation that suddenly reinvented an entire world's understanding of the art of film in the late 1950s and early '60s -- Rosselini, Fellini, Antonioni and Visconti.

All that's left of that generation of giants are the intellectual, revolutionary and film-drunk French. And they're not exactly young. Godard is 79, Truffaut is 78 and Alain Resnais is 88.
