Summary
Animal rights groups fought court battles to the end, but hunters in seven northwestern New Jersey counties held an open bruin season Monday to Saturday this past week.
This hunt was the first open bear season in that state since opposition organizations barred bear hunting after the 2005 season. This year's season was held as a result of a growing population in an area similar to Western New York's Southern Tier counties. The bear population in counties open to bear hunting rose from about 500 in 1992 to more than 3,400 bears this year, up 96 percent since 2006. By the start of fall hunting seasons, 233 serious Category One encounters with bears had been reported.See the full content of this document
