As New York State comptroller, one of my chief duties is to ensure that the pension fund and the retirement system are protected from waste, fraud and abuse. To meet that responsibility, I need all the tools possible to find and stop wrongdoing. I have proposed legislation to enhance my ability to catch those who abuse the pension system. My proposal will allow my office to find local government employees who improperly receive a public pension and a public salary.

The law limits the amount a retiree who worked in state or local government may earn when returning to public employment to $30,000. Unless a retiree receives a waiver, once he earns that amount in any given year, that retiree's pension should be suspended for the remainder of the calendar year.
