Most Americans know little about the War of 1812, which took place in our own backyard almost two centuries ago.

It was a tiny war by world standards, but the events that occurred along the Niagara River from 1812 to 1815 -- pitting Americans against British troops, Canadian colonists and Native warriors -- forged the destiny of a continent.
