When James A. Williams announced in August that he had decided to retire -- rather than sit back and watch the School Board pursue termination proceedings -- one of the sweeteners in his exit package was a $10,000 consulting fee.
(The board also gave him $110,000, the equivalent of six months' pay, and $8,000 in unused vacation time. The vacation time was written into his contract. The six month's pay was, under the terms of his contract, owed to him only if he was terminated.
