Sherwin E. Allen, who helped liberate the Dachau concentration camp at the end of World War II, died Thursday in TLC Health Network Lake Shore Campus, Gowanda. He was 87.

Born in the Town of Collins, he served in the Army 45th Infantry/ Artillery Division during fighting at Anzio and in the Battle of the Bulge, and as a staff sergeant took part in the April 1945 surrender of the Bavarian camp by Nazi forces.
